Portraits are a way for us to remember, or even get to know, people. A portrait shows a likeness of a person. It can also show the mood, the expression,  or how a person is feeling.

By looking at the two portraits below, how do you think these people may feel when you see their expressions?

Artist learn to draw people by looking at the features of the face.  They learn to draw the basic proportions of a face. Proportions are measurements that help the artist make things look correct. Proportions are used to compare one part to the other parts, or to the whole.  Artist use this knowledge to create portraits, and pictures of other things.

Study the guide lines of the face.

Practice drawing the guide line proportion of the face, then ask a class mate to pose for you while you draw him or her. Use their face to turn you guideline picture into a portrait of them.

  • Look closely at the face notice how each part is closely related to the other part.
  • Use contour drawing to show the shapes and the face of the details. In contour drawing you draw slowly and carefully. As you work, imagine that your drawing tool is touching and slowly moving along the edges of the face. Start at one side and continue around to the other. Then add details in side the face. Keep you eyes on your classmate.
  • Use the point of you pencil for thin sharp lines. Used the side of you pencil for think heavier lines.
